Kina Taylor’s Design Intervention Proposal:

A community street mural on the corner of 13th Street and Fifth Avenue.

Reasons for a community mural:

  • Engage all  members of a community.  Allow them to represent themselves.
  • Bridge cultural, ethnic, class and generational divides.
  • Increase civic participation and activism.
  • Give local artists an opportunity to participate in community service.  In this instance, Parsons students.
  • Create inspirational and beautiful neighborhood monuments.

Reasons for this particular mural:

  • Create sense of community.
  • Create an understanding of the different cultures residents belong to.
  • Create beautiful artwork that will replace movie posters, tagging, and scaffolding.
  • Involve Parsons/ New School students in the community.
  • Create a sense of global community by pointing out issues, concerns, and priorities shared by varying cultures.
